Description
Keltic Nordid is a phenotype commonly found in the British Isles where it forms the basic Caucasoid racial type. It is also the major Caucasoid racial element in the Low Countries particularly in the Flanders and Netherlands, « less pure » than in the British Isles. It also exists to a lesser extent in France, and sporadically exists in all over Western Europe, especially in Western Germany, Switzerland and Austria. It has been historically associated with Celtic peoples. This type is a Nordid altered by slight Dinarid and Mediterranid admixture. European colonists spread this type to North America, Australasia, and South Africa, where it is usually found among people of British, Irish, and Dutch descent. Worldwide, it is the commonest Nordid type, as it has a higher numerical count in terms of population than any other Nordid type. Within the British Isles, there exists a type that combines features of Keltic Nordid with Atlanto-Mediterranid admixture known as the North Atlantid. It was the ancient Celtic (Keltic) and Frankish tribes of northwestern Europe who brought this type to the British isles and Low Countries.
The Keltic Nordid type probably shares its earliest formative history with the Hallstatt variety, or a similar proto-strain. The migratory existence associated with the ancestry of the Keltic type clearly involved the absorption of several non-Nordid strains, most importantly central European Dinarid (probably by association with the Bell-Beaker culture of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages). In this respect, one might say it is intermediate between the Hallstatt and Norid types. Additionally, the Keltic Nordid has mixed with Atlanto-Mediterranid, the latter of which is probably present at a low level in the Keltic Nordid population as a whole.[1]
Physical Traits
usually of medium to tall stature, the bodytype is usually ectomorphic with long extremities. The type is mesocephalic (the cephalic index is around 79) and low-vaulted. The face is narrow and long with a sturdy chin. The forehead is also sloping. The nose is prominent, hyperleptorrhine and often straight, though wavy profiles can also be found. The lips are thin. The skin color is usually fair (pale), vascular and often freckled. Often times a characteristic that this pale Celtic skin has, is the physiological inability to tan. This is true particularly in the Keltic Nordics of the British Isles. The hair is typically darker than the Hallstatt type, ranging from dark blonde to brown, on average it is light brown. Red hair is frequent though. The eyes are predominantly light, especially blue or blue - mixed.
A variant can be found in the Aran Islands in Ireland, with more golden and red hair and a slightly longer head, with a cephalic index of 77.8. It is also taller. This type is much more blue eyed and lighter pigmented than the typical Keltic type. This variant has developed over hundreds of years of genetic isolation.
In urban areas of the British Isles, there is a more Dinaroid-like variant with a more convex nose.
